ATRIDOX Antibiotic Treatment for Gum Disease

Question

Does ATRIDOX gum disease therapy cause bacterial or antibiotic resistant microorganisms?

Answer

The potential for the development of antibiotic resistant microorganisms in patients receiving ATRIDOX® was evaluated in a study12 involving 45 patients randomized to receive ATRIDOX or oral hygiene treatment for gum disease. Subgingival plaque and saliva samples were obtained from both groups 6 months post-treatment. Examination of the subcultured microflora and the MIC testing with various antibiotics revealed no significant differences between treatment groups for either plaque or saliva samples. The study demonstrated that treatment with ATRIDOX did not result in the acquisition of doxycycline or multi-antibiotic resistance or in a change in the proportion of doxycycline-resistant bacteria.
